The amount of cocaine that was in Coca-Cola was very minimal. I don’t think it was very dangerous.
I saw "Colloidal Silver" make the rounds on Art Bell and later Alex Jones. Much after that I found pictures of people who had turned a shade of blue from taking it. People still fall for this junk and sometimes it is dangerous.
(BTW I don't listen to Alex Jones I just know of some of his commercials from news clips)
I think labelling soft drinks 'curing stomach aches' (or sickness in general) as a placebo effect isn't entirely true. While the sugar can potentially disrupt the stomach further, in drinks like 7-up and ginger-ale I find that the carbonation clears my stuffy nose and soothes my sore throat. Sometimes it helps my stomach too, although I think that one IS a myth. I'm not sure how the carbonation actually helps me feel less congested or helps my sore throat, but I'm sure there's some amount of science to it. Anyway, I woke up this morning super congested and my throat gets really inflamed sometimes and all of my airways feel super blocked. At lunch, I had a mini can of ginger-ale and it cleared up right away. Luckily I was at my grandparent's house, because they actually HAVE ginger-ale— I don't usually drink soda unless it's the occasional iced tea. (P.S I'm canadian and here it IS considered soda because it's highly sweetened lol, for you Americans it's the same as sweet tea)

One thing that seems insane to me about the US as a British person is the "ask your doctor if this medicine is right for you!" style advertisements. We don't have adverts for medicines in the UK except once in a while you'll see one for cough syrup or over the counter painkillers.

Godfrey's Cordial should have went in the top row! It would cure what it was meant to cure if the parent gave you the right dose. Opioids are excellent for sedation, cough, pain, and anxiety. It was sloppy parenting that overdosed the child. It was not the medicine's fault. Opium has never jumped down someone's throat and swallowed itself!

For sodas that used to be medicines my favourites that taste good and actually seem to do something for making me feel a bit better is ginger beer and tonic water, ginger beer for upset stomach and sore throat and tonic water for sore muscles and muscle cramps and may help me feel slightly better if I have a very mild fever or spent five minutes too long outside on a hot day, I don’t do at all well in summer heat and the tonic water along with a lot of water and ice helps along recovering from feeling too hot, plain water without added salt or sugar can make me feel much worse because plain water can cause nausea if I’ve had a little too much sun and heat in the summertime, but sunstroke is a very serious medical condition so definitely get actual medical care if you have the symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion or sun stroke because it can be rapidly fatal if untreated.

Something I felt carried over as a strange and kinda criminal “medical thing” is putting whiskey on baby’s gum for teething. My mom did it for me and my brothers. Her mom did it to her and her siblings. And my grandmas mom did it for her.
