RACISM in Korea against Indians… My Experience

I visited Korea (Seoul, Busan & Jeju) in April. Everything you said is correct.

"I went on a trip to India and heard racist remarks like 'ching chong' and 'china' at least a thousand times, but eventually, I became so exhausted that I lost the strength to confront or argue against them."

한국에 어는 인도사람들이 점 manner 가 없은 사람들이 많습니다.

인종차별은 인도에도 많습니다. 인도를 좋아하는 한국분들이 인도를 여행을가서 인종차별등 사기를 많이 당하는것을 보았습니다.

As a Korean man with an Indian girlfriend and as a foreign worker living in a different country for over two years, I deeply sympathize with what you’ve experienced. I know exactly how it feels to live in another country with a different culture.

One thing I’d like to note is that Korea is just one of many countries, and Koreans are not perfect human beings.

Keep in mind that it’s been less than 20 years since Korea became a “popular” country, attracting many visitors. Racism and discrimination exist everywhere even in European countries, America, Canada, and other places with over 100 years of immigration history. But as you mentioned, most racism in Korea comes from older people, while younger generations are generally more open-minded and kind to foreigners. That’s a significant and rapid change, considering how quickly their attitudes toward foreigners have evolved.

From my girl, I’ve also heard that there is racism in India, particularly against people who look like Asians from the northeast, like nagas and mizos, making it difficult for them to find jobs or gain approval from older generations for their relationships, or even hear “go back to china”. However, I’ve also heard that many younger Indian generations have a different mindset and don’t care about loving foreigners or people of different races. We are all in the process of improving and becoming better.

For concerned Indian friends, like my girlfriend (lol) to visit Korea, I recommend you visit there and experience it for yourself. If you learn Korean and speak it to the locals, you’ll find that removing language barriers will help you become more absorbed into the society.

I believe Korea will become more diverse in the future, and I’m excited to see how Korea will look in the next few years.

I dont know why people feel their beliefs should be pushed on other countries. Different countries have different views. They shouldn't be forced to conform and certain groups need to stop trying. Life is not fair. Besides, Korea isn't the best place to visit. I'm not saying it is right, but it is life.

한국인으로서, 앞부분의 인트로 영상을 본 감상만 말하겠습니다. 당신이 인도의 전통 복장(맞나요?) 를 입고 번화가를 돌아다닐때, 사람들이 쳐다보는건 인종차별도, 이상한 일도 아닙니다. 단지 그런 옷을 입고 길거리를 걷는것이 신기해서(호기심으로) 바라보는 것입니다. 당신이 인도 의상 대신에, 한국 전통 의상(한복 같은 것)이나 일본 전통 의상을 입고 걸어도 그들은 비슷한 반응을 보였을 것입니다. 심지어 해당 영상의 다른 사람들의 복장을 보면, 이 영상의 계절적 배경은 겨울입니다. 그 겨울에 얇고 나풀대는 의상을 입고 걷는것은 당연히 한국인들이 보기엔 이상한 장면입니다. 이러한 시선에 대해, 이를 "한국 사회 문화의 경직성" 이라고 비판 한다면 이해하겠지만, 이것을 "인도인에 대한 인종차별" 이라는 문제로 끌고가는 것은 굉장히 의도적인 왜곡으로 보입니다.
이 영상을 본 다른 이들에게:
"한국에 인종차별이 없다" 라고는 말 할 수 없습니다. 하지만 당신들이 인종차별이라 느낄 수 있는 대부분의 것은 사실 호기심에서 나온 것이 대부분입니다. 물론, 이런 호기심 자체를 인종차별이라고 부를지도 모릅니다. 그러나, 당신들이 존중받길 원한다면, 반대로 한국인들의 입장도 존중하기를 바랍니다. 한국은 1980년대 후반까지도 해외여행이 불가능한 군부독재 국가였습니다. 해외여행이 가능해진건 1988년도 부터였고, 한국 내부에서는 외국인을 보는것이 굉장히 드문 일이었습니다. 실제로 나는 2010년 초반까지는 서울에서 외국인을 보는것이 굉장히 신기하고 드문 일이었던것을 기억합니다. 하지만 이는 2010년대 후반부터 급변해서, 외국인을 보는것이 꽤 쉬워졌고, 오늘날 나는 길거리에서 외국인을 봐도 대수롭지 않게 생각합니다. 하지만 기성세대들의 경우엔 여전히 당신들(외국인들)이 신기해보일 수 있습니다. 물론 그것이 당신들을 기분나쁘게 만들 수도 있지만, 내가 설명한 한국의 역사적 맥락을 이해하고, 그들이 당신을 바라보는 것에 특별한 악의가 담기진 않았다는것을 이해해주면 좋겠습니다

다들 오해하고 있는 부분이 있음. 한국도 인종차별 있는 거 맞음. 친절한 사람들도 많지만 극단적인 사람들 또한 있음. 차별의 원인은 피부색과 외모가 아님. 점차 증가하고 있는 범죄 때문임. 불법체류자들이 400000명이 넘음. 불법 체류자들을 중심으로 마약거래, 사기 결혼, 상점 약탈, 물건 절도 사건이 거의 뉴스에 매일 나올 정도로 많음. 그리고 인도인이랑 파키스탄인들 클럽에 출입 금지 하는 곳 있는데 예전에 인도,파키스탄, 모로코 남자들이 술 먹고 여자들 성희롱 했던 사건들 있었음. 물론 차별은 개선해나가야 함.
