They literally give you alcohol in the ER if you have alcohol poisoning. Alcohol gets converted into Ethanol by your liver, so when you have a hanger over, you actually have dehydration and a build up of ethanol in your blood. Alcohol in small amounts actually negates Ethanol. You will prolong the amount of ethanol in your system over time, but it's far less dangerous than going completely cold turkey.
This is horrendous advice to give anybody, and especially anybody suffering from alcoholism.
